The first Oktoberfest was held on 12 October 1810 in Munich to celebrate the wedding of Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Maria Theresa of Saxe-Hildburghausen who later became Theresienwiese.

Oktoberfest is dedicated to the fall harvest and beer, the region's most famous produce. People come from all over Germany to enjoy the holidays, which consist of dancing, singing and drinking beer.
Oktoberfest 2005 celebrates its 172nd anniversary. Oktoberfest is the largest folk festival in the world, every year 6 million visitors from all over the world visit Munich Oktoberfest.
Each year, these participants consume more than 5 million liters of beer and more than 200,000 pork sausages as well as a plethora of delicious traditional dishes such as bratwurst, Henkel and sauerkraut, as well as Bavarian dishes such as roast oxtail.
Only six Munich breweries are allowed to serve Oktoberfest beer – Löwenbräu, Spaten, Augustiner (pictured right), Hofbräu, Paulaner, and Hacker-Pschorr.
There are currently 14 main tents at Oktoberfest. Special Oktoberfest beers are prepared for the occasion, which is slightly darker and stronger, both in taste and in alcohol.
The celebration was accompanied by a supporting program, including a grand performance by innkeepers and brewers at Oktoberfest, a parade of traditional costumes and archers, and a concert by all of Wies'n's brass band.
